Digital Badges are a great way to make strides and show progress

Credly does not issue badges to those who are under the age of 13.

• ISCA can issue the badge to the children and youth and not pass them along to Credly.
• ISCA can issue the badge to the guardians of the children and youth. Going to the guardian is a way to make an engagement between the guardian and youth, beyond a sticker. In the pandemic, many of the guardians were not permitted to watch the children perform in the pool. So, the badges can be a progress report for certain milestones.

Credly's price chart has two sections. (purple and white in the chart)

• Pay by badge issued. Up to 500 badges, at $5 per badge.
• Pay by individual on an annual basis and give as many badges as desired for that year. So, for 500 earners, the price is $8 each. Meanwhile, at 100,000 earners, the price is $1 each.
• Given Canada's performance of up to 15,000 students, the fee to Credly would be $50,000, a bit more than $2 per person. In this model with many children and youth, badges would be given to the guardians. 

Long term

• Once an individual has a Credly account, gets a badge, that individual's account does not vanish. Credly holds the user account and certificate perpetually. 
• If a user takes classes in 2022 and 2023, but none in 2024, there is no fee for that user for that year. Then the user account can return to action in 2025 and all the former badges are present.

Looking forward and planning

The ISCA efforts could build for the first year and pledge to align with Credly in the future, perhaps at year two or three. 

Until then, ISCA could find a sponsor to help fund the digital badge initiatives for a number of years. Perhaps IBM would sponsor the badge program. Or, a company such as Toyota.
